It's hard to find much to criticize in this competently written, well researched gloss on the last 20 years of American history. Despite Bennett's well known conservative views, he's actually very fair and tries to go out of his way to find things nice to say about everyone he discusses, including Presidents Clinton and Obama, while at the same time, sticking to the facts, even when they don't reflect well on people and causes the author admires. The book is an all around very solid effort; if it has any shortcoming it would be the lack of any great insight or significant revelations. This is a "just the facts" book. To be sure, Bennett is not merely a reporter here, but an active participant, having been drug czar under Bush I. Perhaps the most interesting material in the book involve Bennett's personal reminiscences of some of the key players of the last two decades. Even with this input, however, anyone whose been wide awake to current events of the last two decades is not likely to find much new here. This book will most benefit those who either been asleep during the last 20 years or are too young to have followed current events. For the rest of us, it makes a useful reference work to remind of the most important developments in America since 1989.
