#1 The Transgender Child A Handbook for Families and Professionals

This is a wonderful book about learning what transgender is and means. I'm a school psychologist and have learned a great deal from reading this; it is smartly and gently written, allowing both professionals and families to learn what children with transgender identity issues need and how they think of themselves. I have used it to help with a teen transboy and I believe the parent will also benefit from reading this book. Hooray!

$ She s Not There A Life in Two Genders

A more apt title for this book would have been "He's Not There", since it is about a man who always felt that he was a female. But then Jim/Jenny was in a band that played the eponymous song and there wasn't a song that conveyed a male not being there. Nevertheless, the memoir was very open and candid.

Boylan struggled with her unnamed medical condition since being a toddler. He prayed that love would free him, and felt that it had when at last he met the love of his life, Grace. But alas, love doesn't conquer all, and Boylan realized the transformation would have to take place. James became Jenny. It was heartening to read of a transsexual person who was treated with so much respect and dignity. While it wasn't easy for many people, including his rock of a wife, and best friend, novelist Richard Russo, most people turned out to support her and to understand the necessity of her change. Even her children seemed to have been completely well adjusted to her transformation.

Boyle struggled with her inability to explain why she felt the way she did, and I hope she knows that people who are involved with transgendered people struggle with their inability to understand those feelings. Ultimately, I think, it isn't understandable or explainable, but that we just have to respect people's right to live their lives to the best of their abilities in ways that make them feel fulfilled. I'm glad she was able to do that in the environment in which she did.

Her obsession with her gender prompted many of her friends to ask her to talk about something else, and she felt a need to keep her sense of humor. Afterall, she is a writer of humorous novels. Out of nowhere, she inserted a letter written to NASA asking to be the first transgendered person to go into space. It was a bad move, and kept me from giving the book five stars. Her humor came out loud and clear in her writing and storytelling.

$ Undaunted Courage The Pioneering First Mission to Explore America s Western Wilderness

Major Robert Clark Floyd was the father of Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. (On page 118, "Captain Charles Floyd" was mistakenly identified as the father of Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.)

In the context of this particular book, this error may seem like a small one to some. However, in the bigger picture (the significance to American history, and, in particular, the Floyd family genealogy) this error is certainly a large one. Therefore, this information is very important.

I am merely stating what many historical documents and letters state and what many historians and many members of the Floyd family already know to be true. Unfortunately, I do not have the time necessary to properly list the irrefutable evidence today. However, I will definitely add that information to this review at a later time. At that time, I will also do a more in-depth review of this book.

(Also, I have not yet had time to review all of the 377 reviews posted prior to this one, so I apologize if this information is redundant.)

Again, Major Robert Clark Floyd was the father of Sergeant Charles Floyd of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

      ++ The Johnstown Flood

I have just re-read `The Johnstown Flood,' and it brought to mind how similar in structure and narrative methodology it is to Walter Lord's classic account of the Titanic disaster, `A Night to Remember.' Both treat with relatively brief periods of time which are dissected hour by hour. Both recount the respective disasters by carefully setting the stage with principal actors and pivotal events, those of a night and those of a day. Both were due to natural occurrences which could have been avoided, but were not. And both are even similar in the number of lives lost. And both are simply wonderful reads.

Among the crucial differences between them, of course, is that History lovers can actually visit Johnstown relatively easily and see for themselves the setting of the calamity and the efforts that have been made to memorialize it. First, the site of the erstwhile lake is readily accessible and the trip gives some sense of the changes in elevations between it and the town, although the long-gone body of water is difficult to visualize. Then there is a fine museum downtown which very innovatively displays the course and ferocity of the watery onslaught in pictures and interactive models. The highlight is a solid wall of the museum space covered with the kind of debris that would have accumulated at the bridge and elsewhere throughout the town, uniformly colored the inevitable, doleful brown of earth-and civilization itself-disrupted. Then go to a restaurant at the top of a hill overlooking the town and accessible by a funicular. The location provides a perfect view up the valley and I guarantee will send chills down your spine as you picture the flood cascading down and destroying just about every living and standing thing in its path.

Finally, travel to the Grandview Cemetery where most if not all of the victims are interred. The 777 unidentified bodies are buried together in a semi-circle of modest markers overlooked by a marble figure of a watchful angel. My wife and I visited several years ago in early June and there remained at the site a beautiful standing flower arrangement with a ribbon saying, "You are not forgotten." McCullough and the memorializations of the town's residents ensure they are not.

Excellent details but a bit too much repetition both in facts and quotations. Writing style a bit simple but I think it would be a good textbook for junior high or the first two years of high school.

I am glad that someone finally wrote about Mr. Lincoln's role as Commander in Chief instead of glorifying just his political accomplishments which were negligible due mainly to the pressing problem of the war.

I would add that the seller, Third Avenue Books did a superb job of getting the book to me quickly

++ Unlikely Allies How a Merchant a Playwright and a Spy Saved the American Revolution

While talk of Tea Parties and founding fathers may be all the rage, the founding of the nation--as Paul's book makes delightfully clear--was far more complex, fragile, hard fought and exceptional than we ever knew. Indeed, this excellent and well-researched book should be mandatory reading for students of early American history. They'll not only encounter Revolutionary heroes far more heroic--and revolutionary--than those of the standard tale: a misunderstood and unjustly maligned patriot merchant who sacrificed all, a cross-dressing chevalier who dared blackmail a monarch, and a playwright who creates and is ultimately undone by Figaro. They'll also learn what "going rogue" really means.

Reviewers will no doubt offer well-deserved praise for Paul's engrossing narrative and masterful storytelling skills. Many writers attempt to bring history to life with gunpowder and battlefield maneuvers, but when was the last time you couldn't put down a history book out of sheer fascination? Perhaps that highlights the book's true genius. It not only inspires a deeper appreciation of the political complexities of its time and the personal determination of its characters--remove any one and American independence could have become just another unrealized idea--it does so through the most unlikely approach: simply telling the truth, the whole truth. Thanks to "Unlikely Allies", to borrow from the late Paul Harvey, now you know the rest of the story.

          ^& Trash

Here is how Dorothy Allison introduces herself in TRASH:

"The central fact of my life is that I was born in 1949 in Greenville, South Carolina, the bastard daughter of a white woman from a desperately poor family, a girl who had left the seventh grade the year before, worked as a waitress, and was just a month past fifteen when she birthed me. That fact, the inescapable impact of being born in a condition of poverty that this society finds shameful, contemptible, and somehow oddly deserved, has had dominion over me * * *."

The literate, well-heeled portion of our society that runs mainstream media tends to ignore the poor, and when forced to acknowledge their existence it often prefers to romanticize or mythologize them as the sturdy, stoic, hard-working backbone of America. That wasn't Dorothy Allison's folks. "We were the bad poor. We were men who drank and couldn't keep a job; women, invariably pregnant before marriage, who quickly became worn, fat, and old from working too many hours and bearing too many children; and children with runny noses, watery eyes, and wrong attitudes." Her people were trash.

Originally published in 1988, TRASH is a collection of 15 powerful stories of life as experienced by Dorothy Allison. Judging from this book alone (I know very little about Allison from beyond the covers of the book), the stories must have a high quotient of autobiography.

In ten of the stories, the "bad poor" are front and center, in discomfiting bluntness and detail. Allison limns the world of textile mills, waitressing, belt-wielding (and much worse) step-fathers, fishing camps, gospel-singing, shoplifting, male lust, and cheap alcohol delivered in a myriad of ways. It is just as much America as 50th floor corner offices, ivy-covered college campuses, health clubs, and amber waves of grain.

Exacerbating her pariah-hood, Allison is lesbian. In five of the stories in this collection, it is lesbianism that is front and center, including some very graphic sex scenes. To me, those stories are misplaced. If TRASH had been presented as a memoir I would feel differently, but it is a collection of stories entitled "Trash" and billed as a stark portrayal of Southern poverty. The lesbianism, though very much a part of Allison's life, is not necessarily part of the existence of the bad poor and its presence in this collection distracts from the depiction of the bad poor. No doubt I am somewhat influenced by the fact that I am repulsed by the scenes of lesbian sex - just as I am repulsed or annoyed by scenes of male homosexual or male/female sex. (I have never bought or browsed through any collection of overtly sexual or erotic stories; sex, like prayer, is too personal to experience vicariously.) I think the lesbian stories would be more effective portrayals (at least for non-lesbians) of the social challenges of lesbianhood without the raw sex, but even so I believe they should not have been included in a collection of stories about trash.

Ultimately, TRASH is about surviving and struggling to maintain some dignity, some sense of self-worth. For Allison, both anger and humor have been essential in doing so. The stories are well-written, if not brilliantly so. Ten of them are well worth reading by everyone in this country. Indeed, if the book contained only those ten stories I would give it five stars.

#*# A Century Turns New Fears New Hopes America 1988 to 2008 America The Last Best Hope

It's hard to find much to criticize in this competently written, well researched gloss on the last 20 years of American history. Despite Bennett's well known conservative views, he's actually very fair and tries to go out of his way to find things nice to say about everyone he discusses, including Presidents Clinton and Obama, while at the same time, sticking to the facts, even when they don't reflect well on people and causes the author admires. The book is an all around very solid effort; if it has any shortcoming it would be the lack of any great insight or significant revelations. This is a "just the facts" book. To be sure, Bennett is not merely a reporter here, but an active participant, having been drug czar under Bush I. Perhaps the most interesting material in the book involve Bennett's personal reminiscences of some of the key players of the last two decades. Even with this input, however, anyone whose been wide awake to current events of the last two decades is not likely to find much new here. This book will most benefit those who either been asleep during the last 20 years or are too young to have followed current events. For the rest of us, it makes a useful reference work to remind of the most important developments in America since 1989.

Bought this on a whim, and was very surprised that this book actually has a good deal of quality and historical content which is what I was looking for. Written in three languages it presents the historical direction of a good many "Male Photographers" whom we have all (in gay land)crossed paths with if we realize it or not. The "Prize" on the cover is just a cheep trick to get the reader, and yes there is a good deal to read, to open the cover and in my case skip over the pictures for text, and have an interesting exploration of the men who offered them selves for service of the photographer. The only disappointment is that the ending about the men who worked was not more extensive.

                  ++ Handyman

Not a bad book, I guess, but the relationship between Will and Jack progresses along very predictable lines and then devolves into a mega-helping of pure emo: lots of angst, introspection, and melodrama. The confrontation with Jack's sons just had me laughing -- and not in a good way. I couldn't help thinking that this kind of situation would only play out like this in the movies (and formulaic romance novels, apparently).

The novel's beginning held my interest but, as often happens in romances of this type, the story started careening out of control about halfway through, like a car rolling down a mountain road with the brakes failing. Jack's constant and brooding ruminations read more like the entries in a love-sick schoolgirl's diary than the real thoughts of a 44-year-old working-class man coming to grips with being attracted to another man.

As for Will, he describes himself at one point as a "Drama Queen"; I couldn't describe him any better myself. By book's end I was ready to see the last of Will. He was, in my opinion, "a mile wide and an inch deep", personality-wise. Jack was the more interesting character of the two and deserved someone better, deeper.

There was potential for an interesting, credible story in "Handyman", but it just wasn't happening for me.

++ Murder City Ciudad Juarez and the Global Economy s New Killing Fields

I purchased the book hoping for a well researched commentary. What caused the violence in Juarez, what role does NAFTA play, what are the greater issues behind the cartel wars. Bowden does make many claims, yet he does not seem to offer any arguement in support of those claims. He is content to tell you that all are corrupt, you should just take his word for it. His objective seems to be to illustrate the human misery which is abundant in Juarez and elsewhere in Mexico. Even this he does poorly. His narratives seem unconnected and disjointed. Old data is often thrown in right next to recent events without any attempt to clarify between the two. The reader does come away with an understanding of the impact of the sever poverty and drug culture, but little to no understanding of the complex interactions that created the murder capital of the world.

Come on Chuck! Having read dozens of interviews, I know you have great information to share. Please write a book that lives up to the title of this one. Let us know you thoughts on the cause of the great violence so that we may hopefully move closer to the solution.

This is another Mob book, complete with the requisite boast of involvement in the Kennedy assasination. The sensational and sexual stories are too much like tabloid journalism for my taste, but some of the interesting history of the Cuban revolution and biographical information about Castro is enlighting. I was in Havana five years ago and thought the perseverance of the Cuban people in the face of so much hardship would be the main story. The author brings several semi-hidden dimensions of the Cuba of the mid-20th century to light, and you can probably add some new knowledge to your fund of Cuba lore.

-- The Book of the Hopi

In the beginning Taiowa created his Nephew to lay out the the universes in proper order. And so begins Frank Waters' book of the Hopi.

Fully a third of the book is dedicated to telling the lore of this tribe, and through the saga you learn of a tradition that explains why this small group of people have been living in the same area for a millenia. As Waters moves to discussing recorded history and the shameful exploitation of a people by the American Government, you discover how unique and special it is that they are still there. How they have avoided the attempts to change their religion by those of other faiths. How they have refused the good graces of the American Government's attempts to 'normalize' their society. And here they remain, living what the rest of us on the continent wold consider to be a sustenance existence as they have for almost a thousand years.

This is an easy-flowing readable social history, and it's well worth the time. Though Waters' book you'll gain an understanding of how these principled people have continued in this area as they have for centuries. I only wish there was a supplement to cover these last few decades as the book was written in the early 1960's, and I can't figure out why he would not include an index. But ... again, well worth the time.

The topic is fascinating. The time in history is interesting. Joseph Priestley is remarkable. This book, unfortunately, is none of these. Well, to be fair, it was "interesting" enough to teach me about Priestley and the unique roles he played in the scientific experimentation of his time. But I felt like the story, facts and added information were all over the place. There were plenty of interesting tid-bits to be told, but they were wrapped up in dry lead-ins and swirled around with boring stories of how they interlaced with other prominent men of the time. The result? A overall final feeling that this book was too much work with very little payoff.

                        #*# Bastard Out of Carolina

I heard Ms. Allison speak on South Carolina Public Radio during the Christmas break. After hearing her, I thought I would read her novel set in Greenville, SC. I am about the same age as she, and I also grew up in Greenville, SC. I was truly intrigued by her story and the characters in it. I know these characters. I and my whole family worked in the JP Stevens "cotton mills" at one time or another; my father for more than 40 years. I worked with and lived around these folks in and around the mill villages on the outskirts of Greenville, until my family finally moved out to a little house on the "White Horse Road" that she speaks of often in the book.

My only complaint, besides the very sad ending, was that some of the facts about Greenville were not correct. I know that this is a work of fiction and unless you lived there in the 50's and 60's, it wouldn't matter. It does seem, however, that if the writer was to emphasize the fact that the story was in Greenville so strongly, that she would use accurate landmark names.

Still, I enjoyed this book greatly. I highly recommend it, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

What has happened in Sydney's life to cause her amnesia? What has happened in Jennifer's life to cause her broken heart? Would the cause of both ailments be connected?

I have two caveats about this book, and they are linked: One is that it doesn't go far enough, and the second is one person included as "Key" to the 100 Days.

The not far enough? Cohen himself notes that FDR started a "Second New Deal" in 1935 after the midterm elections. Most of what we think of today as New Deal programs arose there. So, focusing on the first 100 Days? That would be like focusing on Lincoln before Bull Run.

Second? The inclusion of Lewis Douglas as one of the "influentials." Cohen himself notes that Francis Perkins worked around, through and under him, Hopkins basically ignored him, and Congress overrode some of his veterans' cuts. So, how influential was he? Looks like Cohen is trying to be iconoclastic just to stake out new ground, whether warranted or not. This, to use the same analogy, would be like listing Simon Cameron, Lincoln's first secretary of war, as one of his "influentials."

Cohen did tell me things I didn't know about Ray Moley's post-New Deal turn to the right. And, I wasn't familiar with Douglas at all.

That said, if you want an **overview** of the first 100 Days, this isn't a bad book. Anything more than that? Look beyond these pages.

                                #$ Somebody Killed His Editor

Crack cocaine has nothing on Josh's novels. I've been on a "Josh jag" for a couple of weeks now and still cannot get enough. It makes no difference--short in length, long, or in between--they are mesmerizing. Now that I have that out of the way....

It would appear that this novel is the first in another series. If the rest are half as engaging as this one, he will have achieved quite a goal. This book is about Christopher Holmes, a one time successful writer of British cozys, who has been talked into attending a writer's conference by his agent so that he can pitch the idea for a new series to the editor who published his previous novels. In the process of doing this, to say that chaos ensues is quite an understatement. The conference is made up of numerous "writers" and wannabes. Each is fleshed out admirably. What amazes me is how easy Mr. Lanyon continually makes all this look. This is not "great writing", by any means, but the packaging and story telling are virtually flawless. My concern is that this kind of fast, easy reading can spoil me for other writers/books that might not necessarily grab me in the first couple of paragraphs. Keep up the great work!

As sweet and full of love and pain and adorable gimmicks as it is, there's some pretty rough advice for someone with limited foresight to be taking seriously. Some kids though, it really would save their lives. Ones who really are suicidal, gay and gender queer kids, brainy young outcaststs around 16...

#@: FDR s Folly How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression

This book was an eye opening look at the actual economic effects of the New Deal. I had read in my high school history text that FDR pulled the economy from the depths of the Great Depression, and that was the lasting image in my mind. After studying economics in college and law school I was shocked to see what his actual policies were. It appears the current administration is taking many of the same plays that FDR did, though FDR basically told Congress what to do and they did it (not so today). FDR was a great politician, but he was a terrible economist and this book puts a convincing argument that FDR kept the US in the depression for a lot longer than it needed to be.

My only complaint was that some of the detail seemed superficial - especially the long-term effects of the new deal. Some chapters seemed very detailed and great, but some seemed to just scratch the surface. It is still a valuable read, and I plan to read more of the history of this very important era.

@# Washington s Crossing Pivotal Moments in American History

If you loved David McCullough's 1776, and wanted to read the next chapter in the story, this is an outstanding place to find it. Washington's Crossing is so much fun to read that it might be a suspense novel. Fischer makes it clear from the start that the men who fought this battle, on both sides, knew the importance of the outcome. But more than that Fischer paints a detailed, compelling portrait of all of the participants in the fight including the British soldiers, the American Army, the Hessians, the loyalists and patriots who lived and farmed in New York and New Jersey. Fischer's description of the various American regiments, from Maine sailors who became soldiers, to Philadelphia volunteers to Marylanders in their hunting gear, to aristocratic Virginians in ruffles, gives us a great idea of the diversity of the American rebel Army. His description of Washington and his "man" (an African slave who was a gifted horseman) breaking up a troop riot is worth the price of the book.

Like David McCullough, David Hackett Fischer is a serious scholor and he writes the same kind of exciting, detailed narrative that has made McCullough's books so popular. His portrait of the British Army with its emphasis on cleanliness and discipline explains why the British lost so few men to disease. His explanation of the numerous British court marshalls for rape puts a new slant on old information. As Fischer points out, the British Army punished soldiers for abusing the populace, something that we might take for granted, but which was uncommon at the time--or perhaps any time.

And then there is the description of the battle itself, You have to smile when Fischer debunks the snobbish "debunkers" of the famous painting, with his discovery that George Washington probably was standing up in that boat! Fischer's use of Hessian diaries and letters provided some interesting surprises. After being told for generations that the lazy Hessians were drunk on Christmas and lost the battle for that reason, it was amazing to learn that not only were the Hessians not drunk, they were lying in their beds fully dressed, waiting for the attack! When a history book surprises you like that, you have to smile.

Thought that the story was pretty good. Think that certain scenes were glossed over and not sure why, specifically closure scenes, they just kind of rounded up a bit too neat, not really believable in my head. Wished the ending was a little different.

I'm glad that I found out after reading most of the story that this was written based off of the twilight characters(not that I hated those but it's apples and oranges, you know?). I think it would have possibly turned me off. Instead I had already established my own idea of what the characters looked like in my head.

Again, it was pretty good...but it could have been outstanding.

At long last someone has written a book that gives names and documentation which explain these tragic events. I was 13 years old when JFK was murdered and I was traumatized. I have told my family that I hoped I would live long enough to find out what really happened to JFK, RFK, and MLK,Jr. Now I know WHY the real facts were covered up. I have studied these cases since 1963, and this book finally puts the pieces together. I would highly recommend it.

                                      Amos Lassen

I have been a fan of Eric Arvin since his first book which I came upon by accident. I have watched his writing mature and seen his humor become more engaging. He brings it all together in his new book, "Simple Men" and I could not be happier for him. "Simple Men" is a simple story filled with colorful characters. Chip and Foster are our main characters and I could not help fall in love with them. Chip Arnold is a football coach at a small college and he feels that his life is somewhat boring. He has friends and he and his team have a good relationship. He courts the beauties and from our point of view he should be very happy. However, he feels no passion in his life. Then a new chaplain by the name of Foster Lewis comes to the college and it is love at almost first sight.

There are other great characters--Katie, the female's cross country coach, Wendell Hall, the president of the school who is a teddy bear of a guy and Brad and Jason, two football players who feel that it is there job to see to it that everything is a major issue.

Arvin is a master of description and he also draws great characters. His use of the English language shows his own wit. The book is a fun read (one that you can breeze through without any kind of thought necessary) but it is also very, very sweet (as in most cases when two people fall in love). I totally recommend this book because of its charm and intelligence and because it is one of those books that are just fun reads. I probably smiled the entire time I read---and that's a good thing.

$ Light on Pranayama Pranayama Dipika

This classics together with "Light on Yoga" from the guru need no introduction. Essential guide to anyone studying pranayama and great reference for practitioners of other life-force disciplines (like Taoist Yoga that use the word chi instead of prana).

This book, however, has nothing to do with DIY breathing exercise books (like the popular "The Little Book of Yoga Breathing: Pranayama Made Easy"). The DIY books essentially are books on how to expand and increase the capacity of your lungs so that you are able to breath deeply and calmly (BTW, these are all good side-effect of the real-stuff). These DIY books are certainly useful to promote good lungs, which benefits however can also be have simply by putting on your Rockport (no commercial intended) and to do some fitness walking at your nearby mall. So, if the DIY books are reference books for making toy-cars, the book on hand is a (if not THE) instruction book for making a Ferrari. For folks looking for the real-stuff, below are some guidelines to navigate you through this highly complex book.

Before starting pranayama, one has to learn the asanas, as the guru said, to tamper the body so that prana can flow and be received. More specifically, some essential bandhas in pranayama are learned through the asanas, for example "(jalandhara Banda) is mastered while performing sarvangasana and its cycle, during which the sternum is kept pressed against the chin." (chapter 13). And it is essential to perfect the bandhas for important safety reasons, for example, failure to lock the chin to the sternum in a relaxed manner (hence has to be practiced in sarvangasana), the prana (or chi, to use a Taoist term) will rush to the head causing all sorts of problem, not to mention the famous or infamous side-effect of some folks reaching kundalini awakening.

What is the ultimate objective of practising pranyama? The guru says through pranayama a yogi shall arouse the latent energy of the kundalini and made it ascend the main spinal channel, the susumna piercing the chakras right up to the sahasrara in the head. In short, kundalini awakening in a controlled and safe manner.

Technique-wise this book is exhaustive and with warning and hints in appropriate places to guide a practitioner through. Here, we can also compare this book with the many DIY books. True pranayama is to use outside-breathing (lung breathing) to drive inner-breathing (generation and movement of prana to serve certain objectives). Nose (nostril) blocking is an important technique of pranayama practice, a yogi will use different blocking to facilitate his mind to drive the (inner) prana to certain defined channels (e.g. "In surya bhedana pranayama all inhalations are done through the right nostril and all exhalations through the left. Prana energy in all inhalations is channelled through the pingala or surya nadi and in all exhalations throught the ida or chandra nadi" chapter 27). In DIY books, prana is not activated, it will be quite futile to to inhale or exhale through one nostril because all air goes through the same lungs irrespective of which nostril it comes from!

As the guru said pranayama cannot and should not be learned through reading a book. This book therefore is meant for reference and guidance. It is however an essential buy for any serious practitioner who mostly like will need to refer to the book for further study or enlightenment from time to time in his or her practice.

                                              #*# Driving Hard

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

                                              Rating: 6/10

                                              PROS:

                                              - Good buildup to the characters' initial encounter. Much more tension than in the first two Men in Motion books, Mile High and Cruising. The struggles of the two men while they're each trying to figure out whether the other is gay are well examined.

                                              - Sweet "meet the parents" scene. It didn't feel particularly realistic, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it and wishing that all parents could be so accepting when meeting their kids' chosen mates, especially when those mates aren't what the parents expect for their children.

                                              - Less sex than the previous two books (I think). Actually, this might not really be the case, but the sex seemed less pervasive in this volume.

                                              - Cross-setting interactions with the main characters from Mile High. I like it when authors create a world that transcends their individual stories' boundaries. (see cons below also)

                                              CONS:

                                              - The relationship moved too quickly for me. This seems to be a regular feature of Hauser's stories, but the romance seemed more rushed in this book than in others of her books I've read. Some people really do fall in love quickly, I know, but the characters in this book struggle so much with insecurity, uncertainty, etc. that I didn't find the ending believable.

                                              - There's a lot of sexual tension between Logan and one of the characters from Mile High. It didn't bother me at first because I figured Hauser was setting the reader up for a play session between both couples, but that never happened. So I was left with a feeling of unease because my overactive imagination sensed nothing but trouble in the future resulting from those two men's physical attraction for each other.

                                              - The Texan accents are taken a bit far at times. I was born in Texas and have lived here all my life (all over), and I've met very few people who have quite the drawl that Taylor and Jude seem to have. Example: "I'm thinkin' you're pretty interestin'." The majority of Texans I know don't cut the g off of -ing words at the END of sentences. (On the flip side, Jude's constant "yes, ma'am"s when talking to Logan's mom are dead on.)

Overall comments: A decent story, and fun if you've read Mile High and want to see more of Taylor and Owen. Not one of the best I've read in this genre, and certainly not for you if you're looking for an involved plot.

                                              CONNECTIONS TO OTHER HAUSER WORKS:

                                                    $ The Watchers

Shane Harris's "The Watchers" is neither uniformly interesting or boring. It is both.

Harris's sub-title "The rise of America's surveillance state" implies that the reader will be shown that the nation citizens are somehow having their Constitutional rights eroded. Harris is never able to make this case conclusively and, in the final pages, is compelled to admit that the courts don't support his view or that of so-called privacy advocates.

Potential readers are advised to decide before opening the cover what their stance is on individual "privacy" versus national security. If, like me, you believe that most people do nothing in their lives worthy of anyone paying attention to them and that the notion of privacy in the 21st Century is a ridiculous concept, you can save time and pass this book by unless you are interested in what amounts to a biography of Admiral John Poindexter. Poindexter is a controversial character made infamous by left-wing attacks on him.

On the other hand, if you believe that you're worth being snooped on by government and that you have some "right to privacy" to records that are readily available, you'll love the false premise of this book that you are being spied upon by government.

Essentially the book is about Poindexter and his advocacy of large scale data mining to pinpoint potential terrorists before they can carry out their dastardly deeds. You can see how well this works by the fact that a male was able to board an commercial aircraft with nearly 300 people on board with explosives in his underwear. This particular terrorist had been reported by his father to the American embassy, violated numerous behavioral norms established by airline security experts such as buying a one-way ticket with cash and boarding a trans-continental flight with no luggage.

The data mining program has been fiercely opposed by left-wing agitators and a host of "privacy rights" advocates - yet it managed to hang on in one form or another for more than two decades.

It is, frankly, a boring story and Harris cannot make it interesting. Harris is clearly not familiar with the technology and it shows, at least to a technologically knowledgeable reader. To his credit, Harris never sinks to a tabloid level in trying to generate excitement - if not hysteria - over the scope and nature of the various data mining programs. Yes, the programs relied on commercial databases, such as bank and phone records, seeking out patterns of suspicious activity. There are people who go crazy thinking the government might be accessing their bank records en masse with those of millions of other people. The reality is that on such a massive scale, only unusual activity would gain any scrutiny - which could well occur anyway through an observant employee. Make numerous withdrawals of cash in a few weeks, each just under the $10,000 mandatory reporting level and you are going to attract attention.

The reality is that the concept of privacy in a digital age is ludicrous. No one cares about your sex life, unless it violates the law. Your banking records are under constant scrutiny by the banks themselves and are easily obtainable by law enforcement agencies, even without your knowledge, and have been for decades. If people really understood just how widely accessible their medical records are, they would flip out, but that has also been the case for decades. Practically every bit of information about you is available one way or another. Getting it might not be legal, but it can be had.

The sub-text is that the government's data mining plans weren't legal and that individual "privacy" was threatened. In the last few pages, Harris admits that the court found that what the government was doing was indeed within the law. The informed reader would know that going in and within the first few pages would be asking what Harris was complaining about.

Harris tries unsuccessfully to guide his narrative so as to not offend persons of certain political persuasion. For example, in discussing the disclosure of CIA detention centers in certain European countries, Harris focuses on Adm. Poindexter and a CIA employee who was ultimately fired for her alleged role in the disclosure. He does not discuss the disclosure itself, which compromised national security and quite probably violated the law. Nor does he speak of the role played in the disclosure by left-wing groups with their own agendas. And Harris doesn't get into a discussion how political operatives putting their political ideology before national needs are destroying the CIA and other government agencies.

Instead Harris labors on, politely trying to convince the reader of horrendous plots to gather huge amounts of data relating to the ordinary activities of ordinary people in order to pick out the one in several hundred thousand who might be involved in terrorist plots. The result is a so-so biography of John Poindexter, a very narrow overview of a particular aspect of the nation's intelligence efforts, the not at all surprising conclusions that the intelligence agencies aren't very intelligent and that the concept of personal privacy is all kind of silly in the 21st Century.

Certainly "The Watchers" is not the worst book I've ever read, but it isn't terribly interesting or informative.

A classic maritime reference book; although titled the "Practical American Navigator" it is much more than a basic Northern American navigation text. In fact, I would describe it more as a comprehensive academic text of applied navigation and the associated global oceanography and meteorology. As such, this book is as universal a text as the "Oxford Dictionary".

The other great thing is that the majority of the text is written in clear and plain English.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've read this book twice now and Don Malarkey gives off a degree of bitterness throughout the novel. In his book you will find more negativity about the rest of Easy Company than other members biographies (yes, I have read them), the subject matter chosen by Stephen Ambrose (namely his issues with Ambrose focusing on David Webster), and the exploits of the company after he was shipped to the hospital with illness (he was not there to witness the concentration camp and was not there when they took the Eagles Nest). Read this book if you have already read Compton's book, Winter's (several) book(s), and the book by Guarnere and Heffron. This is not the book you should read first.

Overall: The impression I got from this was exactly "well, what about me?" It became clear that when literary work of Band of Brothers came out that he was not happy about the small focus on him, and that became worse when the miniseries came out.

I don't read a lot of books about the American West but was drawn to this by the large number of good reviews. I knew there were lots of books about Custer and the Little Big Horn battle and I really wanted to read just one. I think I picked the one. It was an outstanding book, a great read that was hard to put down. Since Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn was the most well known incidents of the American West there is so much speculation and out right falsehoods about this subject that it is hard to know what to believe. This book seems to get the subject perfectly. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Custer or the American West in general.

                                                          $ Love Means... No Boundaries

Great story about two young men whose differences appeared to doom their love to an early end, but they worked through some real struggles and conflicts. The conflicts were both internal for each (one blind, one scarred from an accident) and external (family, profession, birth, etc). The story has moving and passionate romance, admirable characters (both protagonists and numerous supporting characters as well, some of which were introduced in earlier works), an interesting plotline, sexy COWBOYS, even a fairly credible conclusion. I've enjoyed a number of Grey's works and this one is no exception. If you're interested in a good gay romance read, hop on and ride to what should be a fun conclusion.

#@: Thomas Jefferson Library of America

First, let me start with my qualifications. I am not a history major, and my knowledge of American history is not where I would like it to be. That being said I'm sad to say that I know more than most people I run into. Sure many people have memorized dates, and can recite historical trends from memory because they had to learn it for some exam. That is not what I'm talking about!! You have to read their words, think about the times they were living in, and hardships they had to endure to give us the freedoms many of us enjoy today.

I am about a hundred pages into this massive volume of Jeffersons works, and it will take me a few years to get through it (I have other interests). However, from what I have read thus far I am very much impressed with it. Jefferson was a very strong personality who walked out on what he believed to be right. We as a nation would do well to elect a man like him into office (if you can find one). This is a man who would have gladly died for what he believed in (no really stop and think about what that means). I doubt you could find one politician in Washington who would do the same today. This is truly a teasure chest of history for those who seek to understand the history not just memorize facts.

This is the classical high emotional story, maybe not much realistic, but for sure romantic. Holland is a former baby actor who spent all his childhood and youth in front of a camera. He had not a normal life, and he believed his image was the only thing that counted. Holland was also gay, and he knew that, but gay was not something that matched good with his clean-face image and so he repressed his feelings. Out of his teenager years he had finally the courage to play the role of a gay kid struggling and winning, but the consequences was a mad fan who scarred Holland for life. I don't know, but maybe that was a sign for Holland that coming out was a mistake, that there was no place in the world for a scarred actor whose only worth was his beauty, or maybe everything was too much for him to bear... Holland decided to retire like an hermit in an Maine island and managed his money from afar.

15 years later Ruby, a young personal assistant is sent to help Holland for the summer. Ruby is interested in the charity foundations Holland can finance, but it doesn't hurt that he had a crush for the actor when he was a teenager. Only that, the man he finds is not the one he expected. It's not Ruby, young and penniless, who succumbs to the handsome actor, it's Holland who is like a virgin maid in front of temptation: not only Holland has had not human touch in 15 years, but he has always denied to himself the man touch he craved. Ruby is young, pretty and like fresh balm on Holland wounds.

Thanks also to a storm that isolates them for some days, Holland and Ruby tighten a bond that is almost visceral, it's not only love, it's need: Holland needs Ruby and he is totally open to emotions without any shield. Holland who was so good in hiding his feelings when he was a young man, now as an adult he seems unable to do that. Holland cries, asks for help, pleads for love; and Ruby is there, open arms for him. But the paradise can last only some days, and both Holland than Ruby have to go back to their lives: Ruby the one he left only some months before, Holland to the one he abandoned 15 years before.

At this point the story shift on romance; but you all know that this is not a bad thing for me. Probably the resolution is even too romantic, the acceptance maybe unrealistic, but it's nice to dream of a perfect ending for a good love story, the type of ending that usually you have for heterosexual romance, and that I hope there will be for same sex relationship.

The book was well written but perhaps a bit biased. Nevertheless, the racism that exists within Haiti itself and from the wealthy "friendly" countries that surround it comes through like a blast of cold air. A must read for those who are serious students of history.

I was happy to see her venture out to something different. Grays character spoke volumes by being a woman coaching a mens team. She was easier on the mens team than she was with the womens team. She was firm and stood her ground. She knew it would be a challenge and it was and she showed everyone she could do it and she did. She went in with the right attitude and took control as the HEAD COACH. Gray proved that a woman can be just as good or even better at coaching a mens team. Gray did the d__ thing and end the end she got the girl, the right girl. That was a nice twisted with Darby thinking she would be the one (nottt). I just loved it! Thanks for all you do Ms. Galli. You are the Best.

My copy goes straight from "his mother on one side and the Earl on t" then, new paragraph (skipping 263 words and a whole charming scene where little Cedric thanks everyone), it continues "hand into the Earl's and stood close to him."
